These functions are primarily useful with files, in fact there is a powerful JavaScript toolkit (cryptoJS) which does just that when paired with the HTML5 file API. This app does not work with files at all, only strings. Fun for students to experiment with but not a truly functional implementation. In fact I may throw a quick interface for CryptoJS together and try to get it into the Windows Store.
