Description

DragonBox Algebra 5+ - The educational app that secretly teaches young kids the basics of algebra. It’s perfect for giving your child a head start in mathematics and algebra. Children as young as 4 have solved equations meant for a 12 year old!

USA Today: "brilliant, kids don't even know that they are doing math"

Forbes: "Step aside sudoku, algebra is the primordial puzzle game. My son jumped right into the game. About an hour and a half later he was solving junior high level algebraic equations. Amazing."

DragonBox Algebra 5+ introduces fundamental topics in mathematics with an emphasis on algebra in a playful and colorful environment. Topics covered include:

* Understanding the equals sign * Isolating variables * Manipulating basic equations using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

DragonBox Algebra 5+ targets children from the ages of 5 to 12 but children (or adults) of all ages can enjoy it. Playing doesn’t require supervision, although parents can enjoy playing along with their children and maybe even freshen up their own math skills.

In DragonBox Algebra 5+ the player learns at his/her own pace and experiments with rules that are introduced gradually. Progress is illustrated with the birth and growth of a dragon for each new chapter.

Dr. Patrick Marchal, Ph.D. in cognitive science, and Jean-Baptiste Huynh, a high school teacher, developed DragonBox Algebra 5+ as an intuitive, interactive and efficient way to learn algebra.

DragonBox Algebra 5+ is based on a novel pedagogical method developed in Norway that focuses on discovery and experimentation. Players receive instant feedback which differs from the traditional classroom setting where students can wait weeks for feedback. DragonBox Algebra 5+ creates an environment for kids where they can learn, enjoy and appreciate math.

DragonBox Algebra 5+ is recommended by the Center for Game Science at the University of Washington, a leading research institute in the field of educational games.

DragonBox Algebra 5+ has received many distinctions including the Gold Medal of the 2012 Serious Play Award (USA), the Best Serious game at Bilbao´s Fun and Serious Game Festival and the Best Serious Game at the 2013 International Mobile Gaming Awards. It is also recommended by Common Sense Media where it won the Learn ON award.

Wired: "DragonBox is making me reconsider all the times I’ve called an educational app innovative."

Features * 10 progressive chapters (5 learning chapters, 5 bonus training chapters)
 * 200 puzzles
 * Basic algebraic rules with which the child can experiment * Multiple profiles for easy progress control
 * Dedicated graphics and music for each chapter
 * 22 supported languages (English, français, norsk, svenska, dansk, español, 한국어, italiano, português, Deutsch, русский, 简体中文, 繁體中文, suomi, Nederlands, Eesti, Euskara, Türkçe, Čeština, Lietuvių, Magyar, 日本語)

Testimonials "Brilliant - My 7-year-old son has now grasped pre Algebra because of this app."

"Unbelievably engaging for kids... - I was hoping for the best with this app and wasn't disappointed. Totally teaches algebra without them even realizing it. Awesome!"

    Great game by Christa

We love this game because it's fun and you don't realize you're doing algebra. We've had a couple glitches where the sizing of the game doesn't line up with the touch screen on our computer, but if we back out of the app, it resolves. We'll be checking into the other levels for our younger children and future algebra levels once we finish this one!

    Doesn't work by Josh

Requesting a refund - the mouse clicks don't line up with the cards, so you can't actually operate the game.

I can't get it to work by Erin

Clicking on the box doesn't do anything. Clicking randomly 97 times around the box sometimes works but makes the game absolutely unplayable. [Attempted on two computers and a touch-screen. Same issue all around]

What do I do? by Crystal

Learn algebraic rules, not really a game by Robert

Full disclosure: I am pursuing a PhD in education, studying video games. I have three children, ages 11, 15, and 16, all sophisticated gamers. This is a good, interactive math worksheet with immediate feedback and a game-like reward system, but my children tell me it is not a game. Users will become familiar with algebraic manipulation rules, but not with the mathematical reasons behind them. The inability to choose a suitable starting point combined with the forced linear progression through the chapters and levels could prove boring for some, and too challenging for others. There is little replay value for 5th and 6th grade students. A teacher could really build off this if a classroom full of students played it. For something more sophisticated (and expensive) try Dreambox (dreambox.com). My children did not think it was much of a game, either, but it does address the issues of finding a student’s correct starting level, and providing reasons for what the player is doing.
